Concentis was engaged to place an experienced Construction Supervisor for a tailings dam upgrade in Far North Queensland.

Our Construction Supervisor was placed with client Rio Tinto to oversee the upgrade of three tailings dams at their East Weipa operations, located in Far North Queensland. Rio Tinto is a mining and metals company operating in 36 countries around the world.

Rio Tinto’s Weipa operations in Far North Queensland include bauxite mines and associated processing facilities, shiploaders, an export wharf, ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals.

Concentis’ Construction Supervisor’s extensive civil construction experience has allowed for the tailings dam upgrade activities to be ‘self-performed’ with a 90-person crew working on a 3-shift rotation.

Our Construction Supervisor was also responsible for the management of various subcontractors in specialist disciplines.

With three projects undertaken over 3 years, our Construction Supervisor was embedded in the client’s delivery team to:

  • Contribute to lead activities including scoping and scheduling.
  • Manage earthworks activities to ‘raise’ the existing dam walls amounting to approximately 9km of dam wall.
  • Oversee the construction /installation of all associated pipelines, concrete spillways and other supporting infrastructure.
  • Manage client and contractor reporting requirements.

Due to the successful delivery of these projects, our Construction Supervisor will continue to support our client with additional infrastructure projects at their Weipa Operations.
